Back To School Driving

The most frequent journey that manyof us do in our cars is the school run.

this twice daily drive may onlybe a few minutes long, but presents a number of hazards that can be the undoing of even the most cautious driver.

A study by insurance firm elephant.co.uk concluded that a whopping 65% of accidents occur within 5 miles of home. One possible reason for this is that the familiarity of the roads and routes can tone down our attention so peripheral vision is reduced and reaction times become slower.

Add to this the potential distraction of children arguing in the back seat, other children crossing roads, rushing to make the bell and vying for parking spaces, and you can see how this routine run can quickly descend into chaos.

The simplest advice for school run safety is to remember to pay attention.

Of course, leaving in plenty of time and making sure your backseat cherubs are sitting quietly are good drills, but in reality things don’t always work out this way.

Reminding yourself that your precious cargo deserves your utmost attention on these perilous voyages, may be enough to switch your attention to potential hazards and get you there and back safely and stress-free.

This is also a good time of year to give your car a series of simple back-to-school checks.

Check your tyres
You may have been doing fewer miles over the summer and with the change in temperature and road conditions it’s important to ensure that your tyres are in good order.

This article [link to article] explains how you can quickly check that the tread meets (and ideally exceeds) the minimum standard, and check the pressure against the manufacturers recommendations.

Check fluids
Oil, coolant, windscreen wash and of course fuel are the key fluids to check as we move into a new season. Screen wash in particular is important as there can be low level sunshine that makes it difficult to see if you have a smeared windscreen.
If your car is coming up to it’s service or MOT date consider getting it booked in early so you have the peace of mind that your transportation is in good, safe working order.

We also offer a free vehicle health check where we’ll inspect your car’s tyres, fluid levels, wiper blades, battery and bulbs, and give you a full report at the end.

Check wipers

Wiper blades can become worn and split over time, so give them a visual inspection (front and rear) and replace if necessary. These are often easy enough to do by yourself in just a few minutes.
