They’ve become more common in modern engines, and knowing the basics can make a big difference to reliability, and your wallet.

So… what is a wet belt?

Wet belts (also known as wet timing belts) live inside the engine, running through engine oil. Their job is to keep key parts of the engine perfectly timed.

Unlike dry timing belts, they’re constantly bathed in oil, which helps reduce friction and increase efficiency. However, this also causes the material of the belt to break down quicker than a standard timing or cam belt.

Over time and as the belt material starts to break down, you'll find:

• Small particles can contaminate the oil
• The belt weakens and becomes prone to failure
• Sludge can build up and affect engine performance

Left unchecked, a wet belt failure can lead to severe engine damage, which is expensive to repair.

What are the warning signs?

Andy talks through some tell-tale symptoms:

• A noisy or rattly engine
• Reduced performance or rough running
• Engine warning lights
• Long gaps between oil changes (the belt degrades faster if oil quality isn't kept fresh)

But here’s the tricky bit: sometimes there are no obvious symptoms at all. That’s why manufacturers set recommended replacement intervals, and why sticking to them matters.
